I've been whipping up this decadent-tasting drink as an afternoon or post-dinner treat for the last few weeks, and boyyyyy is it amazing! One thing I've always loved since childhood is a good hot chocolate; remember those Swiss Miss packets with the marshmallows? That was all me. Though now with being a Dietitian and becoming more conscious of the ingredients while wanting to feed my body nourishing food most of the time, I didn't want to always have to revert to these sugary, processed packages each time I wanted a little hot chocolate fix. Even the ones in Whole Foods didn't impress me.
Can a girl get some good cocoa without all that extra processed sugar madness?
Yes, she very well can. And it takes all of about 3 minutes to assemble.
The key here is using real cacao powder, as this is the unprocessed and more pure form of where chocolate originates from. Cacao contains a 40% higher antioxidant rate than blueberries (!!!), has the highest plant-based source of iron, and contains magnesium which many of us are deficient in these days! Magnesium is important for heart health, but also provides mental clarity, focus, and helps you relax all at the same time. I like the Dagoba brand.
As the rest of the ingredients besides for the milk are quite optional, I find that this combo makes this drink ultra creamy, dreamy, and perfect for when you need a mood stabilizer/ essence of positive vibes. How does this drink do that, you may be asking?
maca: helps the body adapt to stress by countering the negative effects of tensions + anxiety. Tones + boosts the endocrine system. Delivers mental stamina, hormonal balance, and enhanced libido/elevated mood. It has a nutty, caramel like flavor which goes perfect with chocolate or vanilla.
ho shou wu: the beauty herb. enhances youthfulness, reproductive function + sex drive. Balances hormones, improves adrenal function, + helps nourish skin, hair, and internal organs for that au naturale glow.
ashwaghanda: the calming root. Perfect for those anxiety-ridden folk. (hey, you). Aids the thyroid, helps calm and improves sleep.
*I love using Moon Juice for my potion pantry. Most descriptions are found on their website.
6oz plant based milk
2-4 oz water (or you can do all plant milk)
2 Tbsp cacao powder
1/2 tsp maca
1/2 tsp ho shu wu
1/4 tsp ashwaghanda
1 tsp maple syrup or 1 packet stevia
1/2 tsp almond butter *this really gives it its creaminess and blends the powders well into the milk; highly recommend not skipping this.
Directions: Pour almond milk and water into a sauce pan and heat on high for a few minutes until liquid begins to boil. Turn off the stove, and then add in the rest of your ingredients. I then take my hand held milk frother and place it in the pan for a few seconds until all ingredients are blended well and a foam begins to form at the top. If you don't have a frother, you can always use a whisk or pop all ingredients into a blender!
Note: my milk frother is very similar to this one.
Sip alone or with your favorite cookie or energy ball for a warming snack or dessert.
